==Coaching career==
Merrill was the head college football coach for the Alderson–Broaddus Battlers located in Philippi, West Virginia. He held that position for the 1910 season.〔
〕 His coaching record at Alderson–Broaddus was 1 wins and 3 losses. As of the conclusion of the 2012 season, this ranks him #8 at Alderson–Broaddus in total wins and #6 at the school in winning percentage (). Merrill also did coaching work at Bethany College, also in West Virginia.
